October Legislative Update

Greetings of the season – looks like summer IS over!!  It was great so see so many of you at the Annual Meeting.  There was an opportunity for attendees to have a discussion of public policy issues that are important to different areas of the state as well as the broader issues, such as lodging tax and vacation rentals that are a challenge for everyone.

These topics will now go to the Public Policy Committee for further discussion and recommendations to the Board for the 2018 session. I will work with the Board to develop the official platform for the next session. That will then be shared with all members.

Several of you continue to struggle with issues presented by your local communities. While each situation is unique, here are some suggestions:

Make sure you tell the Visitor Bureau story to all key stakeholders. You now have the Template as presented at the Annual Meeting as a guide for this conversation. DOWNLOAD THE GUIDE

Communication is critical in all forms.

Engage your Board members and hoteliers to be strong supporters of the mission of your organization.

Know your community, its values, its challenges’ and its needs. Step up to be a part of those conversations and a source, when appropriate, of potential solutions.

Contact me or any of your colleagues when you face challenges that you would like to discuss.

Make sure your legal documents are up to date.

What you do is so important to your communities and you need to regularly remind your communities of that!!

Also, don’t forget to work on new events for your community and take advantage of the grant funds to support those efforts through Explore MN.
